5th Grade Class
St. Mary's, AK
Welcome to our 5th grade class website!
Who We Are
We're 5th graders at Elicarvicuar (Lee-chug-vich-uak, a Yup'ik word for small school), a pre-k to sixth grade school in Saint Mary's, Alaska. We're part of the Saint Mary's City School District, a single site district. Saint Mary's is a rural community in western Alaska with a population of about 550 people. The local community is predominantly Yup'ik, Eskimo. Class sizes in our school range from 11 to 19 students.
Our Culture
We are a Yup'ik Eskimo community. Our Yup'ik culture has a great impact on our education. We value our culture and often tie it into classroom activities to make learning relevant for our students. We go out on at least a couple trips annually to incorporate our culture and environment into the classroom. These trips that we take (which may be in the fall time on the river by boat or in the winter by snowmobile) are highlights of the year for many of our students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members.
